Big Data- Why its Big ?

We live in the data age. Its not easy to measure the total volume of data stored electronically , but an IDC estimate put the size of the "digital universe" at 0.18 zettabytes in 2006 and is forecasting a tenfold growth by 2011 to 1.8 zettabytes.

1 zettabyte is equivalent to 10^21 bytes, or equivalently one thousand exabytes, one million petabytes and so on. That roughly the same order of magnitudes as one disk drive for every person in the world.

Where are these Data coming from ?

This flood of data is coming from many resources. Some are as below.

            1. The NYSE generates about 1 terabytes of new trade data per day.
            2. Facebook hosts approximately 10 billion photos, taking up one petabyte of storage.
            3. The internet archives store around 2 petabytes of data and is growing at a rate of 20 terabytes             per month.
And there are many different sources of data, which is emerging as "Big Data".
